Hodl means, in the language of cryptocurrencies, buy a quantity of any cryptocurrency and keep it in the portfolio for a long time (generally, more than 12 months).
But would not you say “hold” in English and even in the most common financial jargon? Yes! And the meaning is the same, but Hodl has become a recognized term in the slang of the Bitcoiners community and now of the whole crypto community worldwide.
Everything started from a post on December 18, 2013 on Bitcointalk (online forum among the most popular in the world on Bitcoin) in which the member with the pseudonym GameKyuubi instead of hold in the title of his post wrote “I am hodling”.
The post has been viewed over half a million times, and over the years this term has become part of the common jargon of cryptocurrencies.
